CHAPTER EIGHT
Mexico was in a constant turmoil as one precarious disaster followed another. There had been so many civil wars over the years that few knew exactly who was and who was not in control of the vast land. Only El Sanchez appeared to remain stable within the otherwise warring country. Yet even El Sanchez was not immune to trouble.
Greed was said to be a green-eyed monster and in many ways this was an understatement to what was fermenting in the otherwise stable land of El Sanchez. For few men had so much greed burning in their innards as Don Ricardo Sanchez. History is littered with those whose ambition destroyed everything in a vain bid to obtain that which was not theirs.
Don Ricardo had mustered every one of his highly paid vaqueros to meet him in the courtyard of his mountain home and as his cruel eyes studied the gathering crowd of mercenaries, he suddenly had no doubt as to his motives.
There is nothing worse or more dangerous than knowing that you are right. Even when you are wrong.
The wise never tread this path, but Don Ricardo Sanchez was far from being wise. As with all men cut from a similar cloth as the arrogant Sanchez, he could justify everything he had done, was doing or intended to do.
In his mind, he could do wrong and was always right.
The thought of slaughtering his brotherâs daughter meant nothing to him. He had told himself many times since learning of her existence, that she simply had to die.
It was the only thing he could do if he ever wanted to inherit the land of El Sanchez. In his mind, it was as simple as that.
Don Ricardo glanced upward at the darkening sky and then returned his attention to the riders who now filled his massive courtyard. He shook his clenched fists at the crowd and relished their cheers.
âThis is a holy mission,â he boomed out at the watching horsemen. âThis is a crusade. We have one aim and that is to prevent the land of El Sanchez from being taken from us by an unworthy little girl. You, my loyal vaqueros, will enable me to keep El Sanchez. I shall bestow many riches upon you all once we have achieved our goal.â
Then from the stables, José Manilla rode his horse and led his masterâs white charger through the crowd toward Don Ricardo on the hacienda steps. The vaqueros cheered as they watched the arrogant Sanchez mount his white stallion.
Then Don Ricardo gave out a sickening call and led his horsemen out of the courtyard.
The walls of the hacienda echoed to the sound of horsesâ hoofs as the bloodthirsty riders followed their leader out into the dimming daylight.
